Formula and thresholds

Volume (ml) = 0.71 × length × width × height (cm, Lambert). Asymmetry (%) = (larger − smaller volume) / larger volume × 100.

Clinical note

In adolescent varicocele, a persistent volume difference of more than 20% or more than 2 ml may indicate testicular growth arrest and is among the indications for treatment. The difference should be confirmed on repeat measurements under the same conditions, ideally by the same examiner; a single measurement is not enough for a surgical decision. The Lambert formula (0.71) is closer to true volume than the ellipsoid formula (0.52); always use the same formula when comparing.
