Formula and thresholds
Median (mm) = 0.5 × height + 28.2; lower limit (2.5th percentile) = 0.4 × height + 20.4; upper limit (97.5th percentile) = 0.5 × height + 34.8 (height in cm, 50–205 cm).
Clinical note
The reference values come from a multicenter study of children aged 0–19; the right-left difference was considered clinically unimportant. A small kidney may suggest hypoplasia, dysplasia or scarring; a large one may suggest obstruction, a duplex system or compensatory growth when the other kidney has lost function. Measure along the longest axis and take the largest value from different positions. A difference of more than 1 cm between kidneys is assessed separately.
